I very rarely share my personal life online and the fact I’m in a relationship, let alone engaged might come as a surprise to most of you. Early in my career I made the decision to keep my personal life private. I knew if or when I decided to share my relationship with the world, I wanted to have first built a solid foundation without any outside opinions. I feel like you don’t need social media or a Facebook status to validate your love for one another, let alone allow it to influence your relationship. Honestly, I’m glad we decided to stay away from “publicly” announcing until we felt ready.
My fiancé’s name is Jason and he’s originally from Chicago. He’s an old soul and a true gentleman (a rare species) lol. That’s all I’m going to share about him for now because he deserves a proper and separate intro all his own :). We’ve been together for almost 4 years and we absolutely love to travel. Every year we pick a new country and state in the US to visit. In October 2015, we planned a trip to Italy. When our family and friends found out they said “oh he’s definitely going to propose.” Italy, after all, is one of the most beautiful and romantic countries in the world so I’d be lying if I said the thought didn’t cross my mind. 4 days into our vacation and after visiting one magnificent place after another (Venice, Burano, Florence, Tuscany), I just assumed it wasn’t happening on this trip. These were all incredibly romantic places where he could have easily popped the question plus he wasn’t nervous or acting any different. We just kind of went with the flow every day and enjoyed the scenery so I honesty had forgotten all about it.
On the very last day of our trip (12 days in), we decided to do the Cinque Terre hike along the Italian Riviera coastline. We hiked for 3 hours along some of the most beautiful seaside terrain you can imagine and afterwards ended up in Portofino. If you’re not familiar, Portofino is the gem of the Italian Rivera built around an absolutely picturesque harbor. As you enter the Portofino harbor you can see a castle perched high above the sea on the opposite side. I said “look there’s a castle, let’s check it out!” We walked all the way up to the top and I can tell you now my words won’t do the view justice. Picture yourself in castle high above a beautiful harbor as the sun goes down over an absolutely breathtaking view. The colors and boats are still so clear in my mind. The really strange thing was here we are in what has to be the most beautiful view in all of Portofino and there is literally no one else around. It was like we had the entire castle to ourselves. Jason held me from behind as we stood overlooking the harbor on a stone balcony, said a few private words, and got down on one knee to ask me to marry him. I said, huh? Well, my exact choice of words were “are you #@&%* kidding”?! I was in complete shock but as he held my hand and opened up the ring box reality set in and I said YES!! All the sudden this man comes out of nowhere with a huge professional camera and I yelled OMG I just got engaged…can you please take a picture?! lmao. It felt like a dream or like I was floating. I was shaking, crying, and happy all at once. I can still feel it as I write this even though it happened over a year ago. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is my engagement story :).
(Fun but scary fact) I thought I lost my ring on the plane! It was so loose on my finger because it hadn’t been sized but, of course, I still wanted to wear it. Suddenly as we’re sitting on the plane I realized I didn’t have it on and went crazy! We’re both freaking out and searching everywhere…on the floor, in the seat back pockets, etc. Finally after we both had mini heart attacks, I found it in the small pocket of my backpack. It must have slipped off when I reached for my phone. Needless to say I put it safely away and had it resized and insured the day after we got home :).
